South West

Welcome to the South West region. Home of paddlesports in the South West of England.

The South West region covers the six geographic counties of

  1. Cornwall
  2. Devon
  3. Somerset
  4. Gloucestershire
  5. Wiltshire
  6. Dorset

It is often split into the two areas of Devon & Cornwall, and Wessex, Wessex being the other four counties. It has around 55 affiliated clubs (find clubs here).

Its activities are varied with both touring and competition:

Flat water touring

Flat water touring takes place throughout the region but rivers to highlight are the Wye and Severn, and the estuaries.  Also the Kennet & Avon canal and the Gloucester and Sharpness canal. Visit Canoe Trails.

River Running

Predominantly the rivers of Dartmoor and Exmoor, popular with clubs in the region and with paddlers travelling from further afield.

Sea Kayaking

Predominantly with the coastal clubs, but with interest from other clubs and individuals.

Canoe Polo

Polo has a dedicated pitch (the Bristol Canoe Polo Pitch) in Bristol Docks with goals suspended from permanent wires across the docks. It is used regularly for training and for tournaments by local clubs. The South West Polo League runs during the winter at Millfield School with teams playing in 3 divisions.  Many of those teams from the South West play in the National Leagues too.

Marathon

Marathon races are held throughout the region.  From the estuaries in Cornwall and Devon, to Poole Harbour in Dorset, and the river Avon and canals in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. This region hosts the start of the Devizes to Westminster race.

Slalom

Slalom has entry races at Dulverton and at Frome in Somerset, and intermediate races at the River Dart Country Park in Devon, and at Symonds Yat in Gloucestershire.  Training is carried out at Symonds Yat and at Frome throughout the year.
