Laura Sugar MBE

Paracanoe - Podium

Laura Sugar became women's KL3 Paralympic Champion just three years after joining the World Class Programme, following an incredible performance at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Just two weeks later, Laura went on to claim her first World Championship title in Copenhagen, to cap off what was a golden 2021 for the Leicestershire based athlete.

Laura made an instant impact in paracanoe after an incredible debut season during 2019, accumulating three international medals.

Her first international competition took place in a blustery Poznan, where she won a bronze medal in women's KL3 at the European Championships despite the extremely difficult conditions. In calmer waters, she backed up a strong showing in Poznan with a silver medal at the World Cup just days later.

Laura capped off a wonderful debut season at the 2019 World Championships in Szeged, Hungary, where she won a second silver medal of the season in the women's KL3 final.

Joining the sport through the Talent ID process, Laura started paddling in 2018 and has won numerous domestic races during her short time in the paracanoe.

It isn't just paracanoe where the Cambridge born athlete has represented Great Britain. Laura has also competed internationally in both hockey and para athletics, and she still coaches hockey in her spare time at a local school.
