British Canoeing has written to members today (15 Januaury) to inform them that the organisation will become Paddle UK.
The message sent to members is available here...
A happy New Year to all of our members, we hope that 2024 will be a memorable year.
We would like to start the New Year by informing you that British Canoeing will become Paddle UK in spring.
Over the last five years, the rapid growth in recreational paddling by a broader and more diverse audience has resulted in a change in the interests of our members.
We feel our new name reflects the demographics of our evolving membership and is far more inclusive as it captures more fully the breadth of paddling activity that falls under our responsibility, including kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddleboarding and paddlesport.
In the last Membership Satisfaction Survey, completed by over 5,000 members, just 10% of respondents associated ’canoeing’ when describing their activity on the water.
The decision to become Paddle UK has been agreed by our Board, following extensive consultation over the last two years with the paddling community, partners and stakeholders.
Our colleagues at the Scottish Canoe Association, Canoe Wales and Canoe Association of Northern Ireland are also looking at changing their names and identities.
We will also create a Paddle England brand identity.
Such a change will inevitably have an impact on a wide range of members who engage with our qualifications, competitions, products and services and this will take time to fully embed.
Not everything will change immediately, and we want to reassure members that existing British Canoeing membership, qualifications, courses and competitions will remain valid.
More information will follow in due course.
There will be an opportunity for members to find out more about our new name and identity, on Tuesday 12 March, in a session following the Annual General Meeting.
