Wildwater Racing Ironbridge Classic and Sprint Events

The Wildwater Racing community were in action this weekend on the River Severn for the regional Ironbridge Classic and Sprint events.

Classic races - Saturday 19th June

The 3.25km single run Classic races were held on Saturday, starting at the rowing club in Ironbridge, across the Jackfield rapids on the River Severn.

In the women’s K1 under 18 Kerry Christie from Break Out CC in Leicestershire recorded the fastest time of 14:02.72, to take victory ahead of under 23 Lucy Guest (Nottingham) who finished seven seconds behind to take second, with senior Maggie Dilai (Nottingham) in third place.

The next two under 23 paddlers across the line on the timed event were Lois Leaver (Edinburgh) taking fourth place and Victoria Murray (Breadalbane) in sixth.

Molly Sandercock (Break Out CC) was the second under 18 to finish in fifth place, with Katie Pocklington (WYCC) in eighth place.  Claire Wilson (CR Cats) was the only under 16 to compete, finishing in 16th place.

In the seniors the next finishers were Ellie Seed (Pinkston Panthers) in 10th and Lydia Oxtoby (Leighton Buzzard) 11th.

In the women’s C2 Kerry and Emma Christie (Break Out CC) combined to take victory ahead of the Pinkston Panthers pairing of Ellie Seed and Laura Milne, with Claire Wilson and Anoushka Nabili (CR Cats/Pinkston Panthers) in third place.

Nottingham Kayak Club dominated the men’s K1, taking the first four places.

Alex McIntyre took victory in a time of 12:55.74, just eight seconds ahead of fellow under 23 competitor Francis Huntingford in second, senior Nick Boreham in third and under 23 Spencer Armstrong in fourth.

Robert Jefferies (Banbury CC) was the second senior to cross the line in fifth place.

Sam Leaver (CR Cats) was the first under 18 to complete the course in 12th place, ahead of Michael Philips  Banbury) in 19th and Thomas Merrifield (Taunton) in 23rd.

In the under 16’s Leon Tomlinson (Manvers) took a fine 10th place, with Nottingham duo Joe Enoch and Huw Singleton 15th and 16th.

There was some fine Masters performances in the Classic with V45 Jon Folland (Soar Valley) taking sixth place, V55 Neil Blackman (Royal Leamington Spa) in eighth, V45 Jamie Christie (Soar Valley) 14th, V50 Clive Merrifield (Taunton CC) in 24th and V65 Pete Mietus (Nottingham) across the line in 26th

In the canoeing events V60 Dave Williams (Notts Uny) won the men’s C1 ahead of under 16 Ryan Mallon (CR Cats) in second, Jack Perchard (Break Out CC) in third and V60 Peter Goode (HPPCC) fourth.

In the men’s C2 there was more success for Nottingham with Nicky Cresser and Matthew Enoch claiming victory ahead of Cameron Bannatyne and Leon Tomlinson in second, Huw Singleton and Edward Butler third and the V60 duo of Peter Goode and Dave Williams fourth.


Sprint races - Sunday 20th June

The sprint races on the Sunday across the Jackfield Rapids involved the paddlers taking two short runs, with the best time counting.

In the women’s K1 under 23 Lois Leaver (Edinburgh) claimed victory by over a second, thanks to a first run of 43.44 seconds, ahead of under 18 Kerry Christie (Break Out CC) in second with under 23 paddlers Victoria Murray (Breadalbane) and Laura Milne (Pinkston Panthers) third and fourth.

Molly Sandercock (Break Out CC) and Katie Pocklington (WYCC) were the next under 18’s across the line in sixth and ninth place.  Claire Wilson (CR Cats) was again the only under 16 to compete, finishing in 16th place.

Maggie Dilai (Nottingham) made it a double as first senior with the fastest time to take seventh place in front of Ellie Seed (Pinkston Panthers) and Lydia Oxtoby (Leighton Buzzard) in eighth and 10th

Kerry and Emma Christie (Break Out CC) claimed a Classic and Sprint double, taking the women’s C2 sprint event by less than a second ahead and Ellie Seed and Laura Milne (Pinkston Panthers).

In the men’s K1 the podium places were taken by under 23 paddlers, with Freddie Brown (WYCC) taking victory with a second round run time of 38.28 seconds, to finish just ahead of Spencer Armstrong (Nottingham) in second and Alex Sheppy (Devizes) in third.

Sam Leaver (CR Cats) was again the first under 18 in fifth place, with senior Robert Jefferies (Banbury) in sixth place.  Leon Tomlinson (Manvers) was the first under 16 home in 11th place.

In the Masters V50 paddler Fraser Gormal (Pinkston Panthers) made the top ten with 10th place, with V45 Jamie Christie (Soar Valley) in 18th, V50 Clive Merrifield (Taunton CC) in 24th and Pete Mietus (Nottingham) across the line in 25th

In the men’s C1 under 16 Ryan Mallon (CR Cats) edged out under 23 Jack Perchard (Break Out CC) to claim victory by three seconds.

There was a tight finish in the men’s C2 with under 23’s Cameron Bannatyne and Leon Tomlinson (Soar Valley/Manvers WBC) winning in 48.99 seconds, less than a second ahead of the under 16 pairing of Ryan Mallon and Findlay Mclean (Breadalbane).

Nottingham under 16 duo Huw Singleton and Edward Butler were third, with under 23 pairing Thomas and Harvey Merryfield (Taunton CC) in fourth place.
