November Catch Up with Coaching

This edition includes our NEW Equipment Management and Safety eLearning, guidance on winter paddling, your opportunity to attend our weir webinar, as well as the new rules for towing a trailer.

  • Equipment Management and Safety eLearning: Managing equipment appropriately is an important consideration for everyone involved in paddlesport. For many, such as clubs and commercial activity providers, managing equipment is second nature but it is important to understand the legal requirements of equipment management and how good practice can contribute to safety and help maintain the life expectancy of equipment.
  • Winter Paddling - Changes in the weather: The weather has changed in the UK and winter conditions have arrived. Strong winds, torrential rain, high river levels and a drop in temperature as well as shorter days all require factoring in before you paddle. Please take care, consider your and others' capabilities and no matter how well you have planned ahead, undertake a dynamic risk assessment of the conditions on the day.
  • Including the buzz of weirs in your leadership: We are pleased to share a range of new dates for the interactive FREE webinar ‘Including the buzz of weirs in your leadership’. The presentation and supporting documents provide valuable knowledge for any leader wishing to include the safe, dynamic appraisal and shooting of weirs in their trip planning. The webinar is great for anyone to support their use of weirs.
New rules for towing a trailer

Effective from Autumn 2021

Towing driving licence requirements are about to change. The government has announced that there will be new rules for towing a trailer or caravan with a car from autumn 2021.

Once the law has changed, if you passed your car driving test after 1 January 1997, you will be allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM). If you passed your car driving test before 1 January 1997 you will not be affected by the changes.

DVLA will update your driving licence record to show that you are allowed to tow trailers. You will get category BE added to your driving licence when you get a new photocard driving licence. You do not need to contact DVLA for this to happen. It will be done automatically.

The car and trailer driving test was withdrawn on 20th September. Until the law changes, you must continue to follow the current rules about what you are allowed to tow based on when you passed your car driving test. The date when the legislation will change has not been named but The Government have stated that it will be autumn 2021.
