Congratulations to three-time Paralympic medallist Emma Wiggs MBE who has been announced as the winner of the Inspirational Leader of the year award at the 2021 Leaders Sports Awards.
2021 has been another hugely successful for Emma, winning her second Paralympic title in Tokyo after gold in the women’s VL2, before winning silver in the women’s KL2. This was backed up with her ninth World title two weeks later at the World Championships in Copenhagen.
Emma received the Inspirational Leader of the Year award after having an influential role not only within the paracanoe team, but for her impact beyond the sport of canoeing, including promoting disability sport as a whole, as well as mental health.
Taking place at Twickenham Stadium (Thursday 7 October), the Inspirational Leader Award was created to inspire the next generation of leaders in the world of sport as part of the Leaders Week in London.
Speaking after winning the award, Emma said:
“I’m hugely honoured and delighted to have won the Inspirational Leader of the year award. It was a huge surprise to me to win and brilliant to be both recognised not only in sport but to also be recognised in leadership and making a positive impact and change is even more amazing.
“To win something beyond canoeing is incredibly special. I take our platform of being an athlete seriously to try and make a positive difference to peoples lives.”
