British Canoeing has today launched the 2023 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championship website, with the event just less than two years away.
The new 2023 World Championship website gives canoeing enthusiasts, sports fans and the local community the opportunity to sign up for the British Canoeing international events newsletter where they will receive news on priority ticket windows, volunteering opportunities, event updates and athlete news.
The World Championship event will once again be held at Lee Valley White Water Centre on 19-24 September 2023 and is the first international event to be held at the venue since the 2019 ICF World Cup, where Britain won a fantastic seven medals, including four golds.
Being held at the London 2012 Olympic Games venue, the event will be a great chance to see the Great Britain team take on the world’s best paddlers ahead of Paris 2024, with the competition also being an opportunity for nations to qualify boat quota places for the Olympics Games.
Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist, Mallory Franklin can’t wait for the World to return to Lee Valley White Water Centre. She said:
It’s incredible to be able to host another World Championships at the Lee Valley White Water Centre.– Mallory Franklin
“I have raced a number of international competitions here now over the years and every time the atmosphere and amount of people who come and watch canoe slalom make it an amazing place to race.
“It’s a brilliant course and the perfect place to show off the sport we all love and the fact it is in the build up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games makes it even more exciting.”
After winning her first senior World Championship medal at the 2021 World Championships, Tokyo Olympian Kimberley Woods added:
"It is incredibly exciting to have the World Championships come back home after eight years. I competed in the 2015 worlds at 20 and it was an amazing experience to race such a huge race at home.
"The crowd was incredible and I can only imagine what it will be like in 2023 the last worlds before the Olympic Games in Paris! Hopefully I can make the team and experience the buzz it all over again!"
The World Championships will not only provide a fantastic platform to showcase canoe slalom internationally, but will also aim to positively influence sustainability and environment whilst delivering positive social impact to surrounding communities.
The website also provides the opportunity to register interest in becoming a volunteer for the major event, details on how to sign up can be found here.
As part of an international events strategy, British Canoeing will also be hosting the 2021 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships which will be held in June 2022 at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham.
