British Canoeing has announced the names of the 10 athletes who have been selected onto the new World Class Programme Prospect Support for 2021.
This programme aims to support a number of talented athletes towards World Class Programme selection through 2021 who have been impacted by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Due to the restrictions with regards to travel and access to facilities, talented athletes in their last year of juniors or at the beginning of an U23 career in 2019 have been particularly impacted and missed significant opportunities to develop their paddling in 2020 and 2021 at a critical period in their journey.
The Prospect Support Programme will provide additional support by way of access to high performance facilities under the DCMS elite sport exemption and offers coaching support, integration into training groups, gym access and financial contributions to international competitions, for those deemed most likely to challenge for full World Class Performances places throughout the upcoming season.
Paul Ratcliffe, Performance Director for British Canoeing, said:
“We recognise that this has been a very challenging time for everyone, particularly those athletes trying to continue developing their paddling aspirations under such difficult circumstances through the pandemic.
We have an incredible group of talented youngsters in the pathway as we start the Paris cycle and were inspired by the dedication and determination shown in the 40 strong applications that we received.– Paul Ratcliffe, British Canoeing Performance Director
“It was a difficult decision to select just ten athletes from across sprint and slalom but we hope they can now benefit from this extra level of support in 2021. We will continue to work through the Home Nation Leads to ensure we also connect with those athletes that will be disappointed to miss out on this support in 2021.”
The athletes who have been selected onto this programme are:
The support will commence on 1 April 2021 until 31 December 2021, subject to ongoing Athlete Development Reviews. This support is in addition to, and aimed at, complementing Home Nation Programme Support where an athlete is already on a programme.
