As part of the Keep Britain Tidy Great British September Clean Up, Medway Valley Countryside Partnership (MVCP) volunteers and Maidstone Canoe Club, joined forces to collect litter between East Farleigh and Allington on the River Medway.
With equipment donated by South East Rivers Trust, MVCPs volunteers collected litter from the tow paths alongside Maidstone Canoe Club members who demonstrated a massive effort in collecting from the river itself, even dragging shopping trolleys and traffic cones out of the water.
Many people passing commented on the canoes and kayaks which were tucked in amongst bankside vegetation and under trees, with volunteers untangling bags from branches and fishing out every can. With additional effort by Tonbridge Canoe Club in the higher reaches of the river and other volunteers taking part in walks, over 60 bags of rubbish were collected in total.
"It’s a shame these clean up events are needed," says Andrea from MVCP.
People shouldn’t be dropping it in the first place of course, but, this was an amazing effort by everyone involved and makes our local river and footpaths more enjoyable and healthier for all.– Andrea, Medway Valley Countryside Partnership (MVCP)
