Hope Gordon wins Young Scot award

Congratulations to paracanoe athlete Hope Gordon who has been announced as the winner of the Young Scot Sport Award for 2020.

Hope Gordon

Thousands tuned in to the ceremony on 13 August, which took place online due to the ongoing Covid restrictions, and saw Hope win the sport award ahead of swimmer Duncan Scott and footballer Billy Gilmour.

Hope had a strong debut season in paracanoe during 2019, breaking onto the international team before putting in some battling performances at the Paracanoe World Championships, European Championships and World Cup to take top five finishes in all three events.

2020 was the 14th year of the Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards, which celebrates the inspirational contributions and achievements of thousands of young Scots between the ages of 11-26 who have made a real difference to communities.

Speaking after winning the award, Hope said:

“It was a really big surprise to win the award, especially given the calibre of the other finalists. I know Duncan through swimming and he’s done some incredible things so it was really surprising to win the award.

“I am really pleased to win after a really good year last season, but it is also really good to give paracanoe a bit of recognition after the success we’ve had as a team.

“Sport to me is so much more than the performance side of it. It helps me a lot to get through the tougher times. I really hope winning this award inspires others.”
