On the 24th and 25th of October, an event took place in North America that heralds the beginning of a new era for the delivery and assessment of the British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader.
It has been many years since the last group of Providers was oriented to deliver and assess the award, and this event infuses new ideas and experiences into the programming.
Oisin Hallissey, from the Tollymore National Outdoor Centre in Northern Ireland, travelled over to bring his experience and wisdom to the program.
The two days were intermixed with theoretical conversations, practical delivery and lively discussions concerning the award, and its delivery and assessment in North America. Candidates had the opportunity to present subject maker to include profiling your group, briefings for open water crossings, surf landing and launching and rock hopping, leadership styles and personal and group safety to mention a few. The underpinnings of judgement, situational awareness and decision-making all were highlighted as we were presented with environmental conditions that allowed for the constant questioning of outside remit or not?
The candidates all have very achievable action plans, and left the Orientation as a community keen on working together to help each other develop into the latest group of Sea Kayak Leader Providers delivering programs not only in North America, but anywhere in the world their travels take them.
