GB Junior and U23 Slalom Teams Selected

British Canoeing is pleased to announce the Junior and U23 slalom paddlers who have been selected to represent Great Britain for the 2019 international season.

Following two days of competitive racing at Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham on 23/24th March, the selections concluded at Lee Valley this weekend.

Chris Bowers (Stafford & Stone CC), who has been a member of the GB senior team for two seasons winning K1M team gold at the 2018 World Championships, qualified his spot in the U23 K1M.).

Joining him will be 17-year-old Bethan Forrow, another senior World Champion, who was part of the gold medal winning C1W team at the 2018 World Championships in Rio.

Nikita Setchell (Holme Pierrepont CC) who won the K1W at the Junior European Championships in her debut season, has qualified for this year’s U23 Championships.

Sam Ibbotson of Holme Pierrepont CC, qualifies for his eighth successive season in the C1M.

Greg Hitchen, Lead Podium Potential Coach for canoe slalom, said: “The 2019 Junior and Under 23 selection series saw three days of incredibly tight but exciting racing.

“The number of athletes making the performance standard for the team has enabled us to select a full team of athletes to represent Great Britain at the Junior and U23 World and European Championships.

“We will head to the Championship races this summer with a strong team that has great potential with strength and depth in each class. The athletes and coaches will now strive to continue their hard work and commitment as we look to build on the fantastic performances from the 2018 season."

The ECA U23 and Junior European Slalom Championships will be held in Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia from 4-7 July, with the ICF World U23/JUN World Championships set to be held in Krakow, Poland from 16-21 July 2019.

The next selection event on the slalom calendar will be the senior selection trials which will be held at Lee Valley White Water Centre over Easter weekend. The racing is the first step for many athletes with ambitions to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
