Santas set to make a splash on the Leeds & Liverpool canal this December

Ho! Ho! Hold on to your hats! This December, the people of Leeds and Liverpool are being urged to get festive on their local canal by taking part in special Santa Splash events.

Organised by the waterways and wellbeing charity Canal & River Trust through its Desmond Family Canoe Trail project, the events will give everyone the chance to try out canoeing for free, no matter what their level of experience. With qualified instructors to support all participants, and canoes and buoyancy aids available to borrow, it’s a great opportunity to do something a bit different this December. Every participant will be provided with a Santa suit and there will be free refreshments at the end, plus a prize for the most festive boat (decorations provided – arrive early to dress your canoe).

Santa Splash Bootle takes place on Saturday 1st December at 10am, with boats starting at Eldonian Village Hall L3 6LG. Everyone will then paddle along the canal to finish at the Lock & Quay pub L20 4AP.

Santa Splash Leeds takes place on Saturday 8th December at 10am, with boats starting at Office Lock, Granary Wharf LS1 4GS. Everyone will then paddle along the canal to St Anne’s Lock and back again.

Sophie Peel, project leader for the Desmond Family Canoe Trail, said: “Getting out on the water is a fantastic way to enjoy some fresh air and exercise, so we encourage everyone to come and give canoeing a go in our free Santa Splash events.”

“Whether you’re new to canoeing or are a regular paddler, it’s a great opportunity to do something active on your local canal this winter.”
