Peak UK will once again be supporting British Canoeing’s senior canoe slalom team for the upcoming international racing season - and the 2018 kit was unveiled this week.
Making a move away from the traditional white apparel, athletes competing at World Cups, the European Championships in Prague and the World Championships in Rio, will be decked out in navy with the union flag in pride of place.
The kit was presented to the Great Britain canoe slalom team at a special kitting out event at Lee Valley White Water Centre earlier this week.
Pete Astles, director at Peak UK, said: “It is an honour to continue our strong relationship with British Canoeing. I’ve been supplying equipment to GB’s best athletes for the last 25 years, from the likes of Paul Ratcliffe and Helen Reeves and now Mallory Franklin and Joe Clarke.
“At Peak UK we’re all excited to see what this team can produce in the big races this season. I’d like to especially congratulate Beth Forrow on her selection into the team for C1W category, I first saw her paddle in 2016, it was clear then that a space on the senior team was waiting for her.”
Reigning world champion, Mallory Franklin, said: “The new kit looks really cool, I’m lucky that I get two lots for C1 and for K1 which great.
“Not many nations compete in the RacerST so we’re really lucky and it gives us the edge for competitions. I’m looking forward to getting out there and racing.”
British Canoeing’s canoe slalom head coach, Mark Ratcliffe, said: “The kit looks great and the darker blue is a really strong colour. It is fantastic to have Peak UK on board as a partner.
“The squad feel good in the kit, it performs well and it’s great to have the support of a British company.”
Paul Ramsdale, designer at Peak UK, said: “It’s been great to give the slalom team a new look for this year and I’m really pleased with how it has come out.
“Evidence has shown a relationship between feeling good in the equipment an athlete is wearing and their performance levels so with this new design printed on to our Olympic Gold winning Racer ST we hope to see Championship medal winning runs from the team in 2018.”
The Racer ST is a ground-breaking three-in-one garment. It combines a paddling jacket with a spraydeck and buoyancy aid for the ultimate streamlined performance. Rather than using the PFD as the main source of buoyancy the Racer ST holds around 30 percent of its flotation in its spraydeck, leaving just 20mm flotation foam on the athlete’s torso. This allows the paddler to get closer to the slalom gates, cut the racing lines tighter and ultimately race at higher speeds down the course.
After more than four years in development, the Racer ST was worn by Joe Clarke on his way to Britain’s first K1M Olympic gold medal and David Florence and Richard Hounslow to their second Olympic silver medal in two consecutive Games.
