Call for sprint competition working group members

British Canoeing are looking for 3 members of the flatwater racing community – current paddlers, former paddlers or coaches who feel they could input constructively to the working group.

Competition is at the heart of sprint racing, it attracts and retains paddlers, helps showcase the sport, raises the profile and provides an effective paddler pathway. Having a domestic sprint racing competition structure that provides the right quality and quantity of opportunities throughout the pathway is essential.

Within the sprint racing 4 year plan, competition was identified as one of the central pillars, specifically around:

  • National regattas
  • Local and regional regattas
  • IT systems to support the regattas
  • Competition calendar
  • Talent pathways

The 5 national regattas, held at Holme Pierrepont are at bursting point so it seems timely to bring together a group of people from within the racing community to look at pulling together the many conversations and discussions to identify different options to take us forwards.

We are looking to set up a competition working group which brings together coaches and paddlers from within the sprint community alongside representatives from the Sprint Racing Committee and British Canoeing staff.

The group will:

  • review what works well within the current competition structure
  • identify the challenges and threats around the current competition structure
  • consult  with clubs, coaches, paddlers and parents on the current model and possible future models
  • develop options for a competition structure that meets the needs of the key groups (paddlers, clubs and coaches) and is financially viable
  • develop proposals for delivery, in phases.

  • Running club regattas and events
  • Regatta/ race management
  • Junior development
  • Developing and implementing pathways for paddlers
  • Paddle-Ability/ Paracanoe

We are really keen to have an equal representation of men and women and welcome applications from all home nations and from people across all age groups (although you’ll need to be over 18 years of age). We will aim to meet at existing events or other agreed venues, and if other meetings are required we will pay reasonable out of pocket expenses.

We are also looking for someone to Chair the working group. We are looking for a dynamic, positive person with the drive and enthusiasm to lead and manage the group. Bringing consensus to discussions and ensuring the key responsibilities of the group are met. If you feel you have the skills and experience for this then please include this on your application (there is a separate section on the application from below).

A simple application form can be found here.

This is a great opportunity to be part of shaping a competition structure for sprint racing that meets your needs!

If you have any questions please email anna.gray@britishcanoeing.org.uk or speak to a member of the Sprint Racing Committee.
