6 Reasons to Jump in a Boat this National Go Canoeing Week

British Canoeing are challenging the nation to paddle 45,000 miles this National Go Canoeing Week! From 26th May to 3rd June events and activities will be taking place across the country to get everyone on the water, whatever their ability.

Here are six great reasons to get involved:

1. Be a part of something big

National Go Canoeing Week only works when everyone gets involved. With an ambitious mileage target for the week every mile you paddle really will count.

Last year over 13,000 people joined in with The Big Adventure and got on the water during the week. And the great thing is you don’t ever have to have been in a boat before! Starter Sessions and Guided Tours are perfect ways for beginners to get on the water.

During National Go Canoeing Week clubs and centres all around the country run activities for all abilities. New activities are added to the website every week. Find your fun here.

2. Get a new view

The world looks different from a boat. Get a fresh perspective on your local area or go somewhere completely new. Take in urban landscapes and rural idylls.

Choose the exhilaration of whitewater or enjoy a peaceful paddle on lakes and canals. There is no end to the variety on offer; just get in a boat and keep on paddling. If you’re not sure where to go you can get some great ideas with British Canoeing Canoe Trails.

Canoe Trails are self guided adventures on waterways all around the UK. With over 140 currently listed on the website your perfect adventure is just around the corner.

3. Choose your own adventure

There are hundreds of organised activities across the country but you can choose to plan your own adventure too.

If you need a little inspiration then Go Canoeing Challenge Routes will be perfect for you. Challenge Routes are located around the country and have varying levels of difficulty. Train up, take on a route and get your name on the route leaderboard. You could even decide to take one on as a charity challenge.

The Three Lakes Challenge is the ultimate paddling challenge. Take on the three longest lakes in England, Scotland and Wales and join the leaderboard of champions.

4. Get healthy whilst having fun

Fed up of pounding the streets on your run or dodging traffic on the bike? Canoeing is low impact and can be anything from gentle exercise to a full cardio workout.

Not only will you improve your core and upper body strength but paddling is great for your mental health too. Previous research has shown that canoeing enhanced feelings of self-worth, confidence and adequacy in participants. They also reported feeling better about their physical appearance - how great is that?!

Joining a local club or centre is the perfect first step to paddling fitness. The British Canoeing website has over 650 listed on their Canoe Near You Map.

5. Share the adventure

Paddling is such a sociable activity and its versatility means there is a great way for everyone to get involved. Did you know you can get a whole family (and the dog!) in a canoe?!

Build family memories to last a lifetime. Make other couples jealous with tales of romantic picnic paddles. Relive campfire tales with your mates in the pub. Whoever you get out with the memories you create will be priceless.

Keep up to date on the latest British Canoeing news and offers & gain access to over 5000 km of waterways by becoming a member. You also get Civil Liability Insurance, which means you get peace of mind.

6. Did we mention the prizes?!

The week is a celebration of all paddlers and there is a chance for everyone to win too! Anyone who registers at least one mile throughout the week will be entered into a prize draw with some great spot prizes.

For the really competitive amongst you there are also prizes for the top mileage paddled by male, female and junior paddlers for the week. Last years top male and female paddlers clocked up 155 and 120 miles respectively. Have you got what it takes to be the top paddler this year?!

Send us your smiles! When you register miles you can also upload pictures of your fun times on the water. Not only can you get featured on the homepage of the website but you will also be entered into the draw to win a Go-Pro camera!

We love to see what you are up throughout National Go Canoeing Week. Post your pictures and tag #thebigadventure and #britishcanoeing on social media, so we can share your fun throughout the week.
