Junior & U23 Sprint Squad Selected For European Championships

Ahead of the Junior and U23 Sprint European Championships coming up in Belgrade, Serbia; British Canoeing has announced the squad set to compete at the Championships which begin on Thursday this week.

A total of 24 athletes have been selected for the British team for the upcoming Championships, consisting of a blend of experience and athletes making their GB Championship debuts.

2016 Olympian Rebeka Simon (Elmbridge) goes into the Championships in fine form, after convincing victories in the June regatta, and a fourth place finish in the Szeged World Cup. She lines up in both the K1 500m and K1 1000m. 

She is joined in the women’s U23 Team by Deborah Kerr (Strathclyde) and Sam Rees-Clark (Nottingham) who will race together in both the K2 500m and K2 1000m.  Rachel Syme (Kirkcaldy), Emma Ricketts (Anker Valley), Tanisha Clayton (Holme Pierrepont) and Lucy Lee-Smith (Norwich) compete in the U23 WK4 500m.

In the men’s U23 squad, Stelian Naftanalia (Nottingham) will take on the K1 200m event. Tom Lusty (Solihull), who claimed the K1 1000m national title during the June regatta, takes up the same event again in Belgrade. 2016 World and European Junior medallists Noah Dembele (Leaside) and Trevor Thomson (Ealing) resume their partnership, joining forces to compete in the K2 200m, whilst they will combine with Naftanalia and Sam Glover (Holme Pierrepont) to challenge for the K4 500m title.

Former Girls4Gold athlete, Katie Reid (Holme Pierrepont) will compete in both C1 200m and C1 500m, whilst Beth Gill (Holme Pierrepont) and Afton Fitzhenry (Canoe N.Ireland) will challenge for the C2 200m.

Meanwhile in the Junior squad, Ieuan James (Forth), Miki Marciniak (Wey), Charlie Smith (Leighton Buzzard), Ed Nightingale (Wiltshire Youth) and Spencer Armstrong (Devizes) make up the men’s squad.

Renee Myburgh (Royal), Florence Duffield (Norwich), Rachael Kneen (Forth) and Ruth Bennett (Fladbury) complete the women’s squad for the upcoming European Championships.
