On Wednesday the 21st June Ivan Lawler, marathon champion and President of British Canoeing, Jess Walker, a member of the Team GB canoe squad at both London & Rio, Oscar McKittrick, a GB junior marathon squad member and two of British Canoeing’s coaches visited Gordon's school to run the first Gordon's Kayak ergo challenge.
The challenge was to paddle a kayak ergo machine a maximum distance in 35 seconds as this was Liam Heath's gold medal winning time at Rio 2016.
There were four ergos and each house had nominated a year 7, 8, 9 plus one other student from any other year, to compete against each other.
The house competition was very closely contested with only 10 metres separating 6th from 2nd place, but out in front were Balmoral house.
The students not only got to try out racing and received coaching from former & current Olympians but also got to see the equipment used by top flight athletes with a Rio specification single K1, carbon paddles and a full carbon, elite ocean racing surf ski.
Most importantly the students showed some real raw talent, enthusiasm and plenty of determination and a few promising students are going to be invited to join the Gordon's Kayak squad which is being run in partnership with Elmbridge canoe club in Weybridge.
The racing certainly matched the weather on one of the hottest days of the year!
Congratulations on a success event Gordan's School. We look forward to seeing the event grow even more next year!
