U23 Sprint Teams Selected For European and World Championships

Following an exciting weekend of racing at the Canoe Sprint National Championships in Nottingham, part of the British Canoeing ‘Event Series’, the International Panel is now pleased to announce the teams selected to represent Great Britain at the U23 European and World Championships later this summer.

Tom Lusty

The Under 23 European Championships will take place in Plovdiv, Bulgaria 14-17 July. Six men and seven women have been named today, with 12 clubs represented.

Amongst the ones to watch are Thomas Lusty, who was the outstanding male athlete for Great Britain at the Duisburg World Cup last month, qualifying for the B final of both the K1 500 and 1000m, finishing an impressive third, over the shorter distance.

For the women, Lucy Lee-Smith, who has made great progress over recent months, will step up from Juniors this year, to make her U23 international debut, whilst the Girls 4 Gold programme is also proving its worth, with four women featuring over the two competitions – Afton Fitzhenry, Bethany Gill, Amy Turner and Katie Reid.

Reid who made an outstanding start on her GB senior debut in Duisburg, winning World Cup bronze in the C1 200m, will be keen to demonstrate her international credentials further, when she races at the Under 23 World Championships in Minsk, Belarus 28-31 July and will be confident of seeing an improvement on her 10th place in 2015.

Strathclyde’s Deborah Kerr, a double Junior World Championship medallist last year will make her U23 debut in Minsk, teaming up with Samantha Rees Clark in the K2 500m.

It will also be a busy summer for the K2 pairings of Lewis Fletcher and Matthew Robinson in the 200m and Mathew Bowley and Daniel Johnson in the 1000m. Both A finalists at U23 Worlds in 2015 and 2014 respectively, they will race in Plovidiv and Minsk, having first teamed up to form a K4 at the senior European Championships in Moscow at the end of June.
Announcing the teams, Heather Williams, Talent Pathway Manager said: “The selection trials were hotly contested, with athletes demonstrating a significant step up this year to meet the required performance standards, which was excellent and as a result we have some strong teams heading to Plovdiv and Minsk.

Katie Reid

I would like to thank all the club coaches and British Canoeing staff that have continually supported these athletes, getting them to this point in the season and I am looking forward to some great performances over the next few months. The European’s are an important building block towards the U23 World Championships – our target event this year, where we are looking to achieve as many athletes in A finals as possible.
