For some time, without a guaranteed egress point in the Ripon area, trips from upstream of Ripon had been potentially difficult, albeit the stretch has previously been paddled regularly for very many years. The last guaranteed egress point above Ripon has for some time been at Slenningford, 5 miles away. The long term aim of this purchase was to open up several miles of ‘lost’ river, guaranteeing egress point for trips downstream into Ripon, as well as access for trips down past Newby Hall to Boroughbridge, Aldwark, Linton on Ouse, York and the Humber.
The trip down from Sleningford to Ripon contains some of the most stunning scenery in Yorkshire. After the rapids of Slenningford the river calms down, but has moving water and several minor rapids almost all the way down to Ripon, making it a great intermediate trip. At normal levels, the section below Ripon is probably best suited for open canoe touring and novice river trips.
The Ripon site is a 2.5 acre grass paddock located east of North Bridge, bordering North Bridge Road and Magdalens Road in Ripon. It has a private gated entrance and access to the river. There is easy access to the road network with the A61 Ripon Bypass also adjacent to the site.
British Canoeing's Ripon Site is at Magdalen's Road, Ripon, HG4 1HX. The site is adjacent to the road bridge with access via double field gates opposite number 18 Magdalen's Road.
The Ripon land is managed by a subcommittee of the Yorkshire Regional Development Team. All bookings and enquiries for use of the Ripon site should be addressed to the contacts listed below. Site entry details (lock code) will be provided at the time of booking.
Outside of formal events (where facilities are provided) no mandatory charge is made for use by British Canoeing Members and Affiliated Clubs, but commercial coaching activity will require a fee to be paid. Click the 'Further Information' tab for more donation information.
Please park your vehicles within our site and NOT in the gateway, ground conditions permitting. This removes us from adding to the parking problems for local residents.
Please take home all litter and indeed remove any which has been left by others. There is NO refuse collection from the site and all litter remaining is the result of fly tipping.
Send a blank e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org to trigger an automatic reply containing additional information, including contact details for those managing the site.

Yorkshire Region owns and maintains this site on the River Ure to enable paddlers to access egress the river for trips or for the site to be used as a coaching site.
No mandatory charge is made for use by British Canoeing Members and Clubs, but commercial coaching activity will normally require a fee to be paid.
Donations would however be very welcome from clubs and individuals and provide the necessary funds towards upkeep of the site including grass cutting and fence / boundary maintenance (suggested donation £2.00 per user per day).
Cheques should be payable to Washburn Committee and should be sent to: Washburn Treasurer, Steve Henderson, 75 Monkbridge Road, Meanwood, LEEDS LS6 4HH. email: email@example.com
