Environmental Volunteering Days
Environmental volunteering days provide excellent opportunities to get outdoors, both on and off the water. British Canoeing works with a wide variety of environmental charities and waterways organisations to improve our waters.
Through our partnerships there are lots of opportunities for paddlers to get involved in conservation projects. These include:
- River clean-up and litter picks – from the bank side or on the water
- Canal restoration projects
- Clearing invasive species like Himalayan Balsam
- Wildlife surveying
No cost, no experience needed: You don’t need any experience or background in environmental or canoeing skills for the vast majority of our projects. They can be a great to help you build some however! As these events are run to help improve our waterways there will normally be no charge for attending – some may even give you some bonuses such as discounted sessions.
Equipment and clothing
The equipment and clothing required will depend on type of volunteering you will be doing. Some events will be on the bankside, while others may provide you with all equipment including suitable canoe or kayak and safety equipment. However, some will require people to bring their own boat along. The equipment required for each event will be outline in the specific event details.
Find an event
We’ll try to include as many events run by our partners as possible, but please let us know if you’d like to get involved but can’t see events near you. We can help you find an event – or even help you organise your own. To find out if an event is for you we recommend you contact the organiser who will be able to tell you more.
Because they are run in partnership with different environmental charities and waterways organisations, each volunteering opportunity is different and British Canoeing’s involvement at each will vary. As many events are run by environmental charities you may wish to become a member or donate if you wish to support their work in future, but this is entirely up to you.
If you are an organisation or charity interested in working with us to develop some volunteering opportunities we would love to hear from you. Contact Chris Page by email or by telephone on 0115 896 8837 for more information.
Some environmental volunteering days will cater for disabilities better than others. If you have a disability and would like to take part in an Event, please look at the specific event information to see what facilities are available or please contact the event organiser who will let you know if they can meet your requirements.
