Expand Touring Award

Your Touring Award endorses your skill, judgment and decision making required to have a successful day on a river or estuary.

1 Touring Award Min

You will be confident in planning and undertaking journeys with proficient skills to be in control throughout. Your award should be seen as a sound basis for building the experience and knowledge associated with the Open Water Touring Award holders.

Expand Open Water Touring Award

Your Open Water Touring Award endorses your judgment, decision making and expertise and requires a good understanding of touring on open water or estuaries.

2 Open Water Touring

You should be confident planning and undertaking journeys with winds up to force 4. On the sea you will be using sheltered areas, small bays, harbours and the upper reaches of some suitable, slow moving estuaries during neap tides, with minimal possibility of being blown offshore. You will be happy operating in force 3 wind (force 2 if the wind direction is offshore). Your confidence should be based upon both proficiency in skills and a broad appreciation of your surroundings and the environmental context. Your award should be seen as a sound basis for independently building the experience and expertise associated with Multi Day Touring Award holders.

Expand Multi Day Touring Award

As a Multi-Day Touring Award holder, you will have the ability to apply your choices to an enjoyable multi-day trip on a variety of waters including canals, lochs/lakes, estuaries and sections of rivers up to grade 2.

3 Multi Day Touring

Touring on open inland water with a potential fetch of up to 1000m and winds up to force 4(5). On the sea, you will be operating along simple coastlines with easy landing throughout and minimal possibility of being blown offshore and no tidal races or over-falls. Any swell will be no greater than 0.5m and winds not above Beaufort force 4 (or Beaufort force 3 if offshore).

Expand Qualification Links & Certification

Although not prerequisites, these awards provide appropriate acknowledgement of personal skills for paddlers wanting to attend Coaching & Leadership qualifications. Achieving these awards ahead of the relevant qualification will enable you to focus on the course content, rather than being concerned with your personal skills.
