Sea Kayak Leader

This course delivers the personal skill level and leadership ability required to lead a group of paddlers, on short, single or multi-day journeys in a moderate tidal water environment with winds not exceeding Beaufort Force 4.

Paddlers wishing to complete a Sea Kayak Leader Assessment are required to register before they are able to attend the course. It is advisable to do this at least 2-weeks prior to the assessment date.

At the point of registration the following prerequisites are required:

Expand Course Structure

The course content is delivered over at least two days formal training in personal skills, leadership and safety and rescue, followed by a separate two-day assessment.

Some training courses also include the prerequisite Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning course (extending the programme by an additional day).

British Canoeing 3 Star Sea Kayak standard is the appropriate level of performance for paddlers to begin working towards the Sea Kayak Leader.

Once training has been completed candidates have up to three years to complete the assessment prerequisites and progress to assessment. If more time is required extension requests will be considered on a case by case basis.

Expand Assessment & Certification

Assessments are normally run over two days.

The choice of venue should give the opportunity for:

  • Periods of no less than sea state 3-4 (or a tidal flow creating similar conditions)
  • A rocky coastline with available landings at least every 1-2 miles and areas where it is not easy to land
  • Launching and landing through small surf, less than 1 metre (trough to crest height)

Upon completion of the Assessment the course provider will submit successful participants for certification.
