River Raft Guide Grade 4

The British Canoeing River Raft Guide Grade 4 award is aimed at anyone over the age of 18 who would like to take groups of people white water rafting on natural rivers. 

The qualification will let you work under the guidance of a qualified British Canoeing Raft Trip Leader.

Aspirant River Raft Guides Grade 4 are required to complete a Leader Registration Form on completion of the assessment.

Candidates are not required to register ahead of their training. Should the candidate have achieved the British Canoeing Stadium Raft Guide and have a minimum of 60 hours logged stadium guiding, they do not need to attend a River Raft Guide Training but must ensure they have all the river and rope work requirements for assessment.

Candidates are required to register at their assessment. At the point of registration, the following prerequisites are required: 

  • Attended a British Canoeing River Raft Guide Grade 4 Training course 
  • National Association membership
  • Current First Aid certificate (16 hours) with CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
  • It is advised that the candidate has undertaken the Advanced WWSR or Rescue 3 WRT Pro qualification.

You may APL this with supporting evidence and recommendation by a Level 4 or 5 Raft Guide.

  • Logbook – This must be a minimum of 40 hours of Guiding on Grade 4. These are both a minimum and may be more if the Guide does not have any transferable skills from another white water discipline.

Candidates must be 18 years or over at the time of assessment.

Expand Course Structure

To achieve the British Canoeing River Raft Guide Grade 4 Award, candidates are required to attend the British Canoeing River Raft Guide training. Upon completion of the training and the other assessment prerequisites, candidates can then put themselves forward for assessment. Assessments will be a minimum of 3 hours (a minimum of 2 hours Guiding and 1 hour ropes/rescue skills).

Should the candidate have achieved the British Canoeing Stadium Raft Guide and have a minimum of 60 hours logged stadium guiding, they do not need to attend a River Raft Guide Training but must ensure they have all the river and rope work requirements for assessment.

Expand Certification

Upon successful completion of the assessment, the course provider will submit successful participants for certification. The course provider is required to complete a course schedule and send this to their National Association, along with an administration fee of £10 per person attending.

Candidates are required to complete a Leader Registration (LR) Form on completion of the assessment, which should be returned to the candidates Home Nation with the registration fee of £39 by the provider.
