Advanced White Water Kayak Leader

This course demonstrates a candidate has entered the top level of performance, involving a high level of personal skill, leadership ability and judgement to lead groups of paddlers with a range of experience, up to and including advanced white water kayak.

It is the appropriate test for paddlers who wish to lead groups of paddlers on advanced river journeys in white water kayaks.

Expand Registration

Paddlers wishing to complete an Advanced White Water Leader Assessment are required to register before they are able to attend the course. It is advisable to do this at least 2-weeks prior to the assessment date.

At the point of registration the following prerequisites are required:

  • Relevant Leadership Training: Advanced White Water Leader training within previous 3 years.
  • Relevant Safety Training: Advanced White Water Safety & Rescue
  • First Aid Award: Recognised 2-day First Aid within last 3 years
  • Registration Fee: £39 for British Canoeing Members
  • Age: 18 years of age, or older

Please note: Candidates need to ensure their safety and rescue skills are current and up-to-date before presenting for an assessment; it is strongly advised that their AdWWSR training is recent to ensure this is the case.

Paddlers who already meet these prerequisites are invited to register now using the Leader Registration (LR) Form.

The Advanced White Water Kayak Leader course content covers the following:

  • Part A – Personal Paddling Skills
  • Part B – Rescue Skills
  • Part C – Safety, Leadership & Group Skills
  • Part D – Theory

Expand Course Structure

The course content is delivered over at least two days formal training in personal skills leadership, and safety and rescue, followed by a separate two-day assessment.

Some training courses can be extended by an additional two days to include the prerequisite Advanced White Water Safety and Rescue training.

To get the most out of the Advanced Water Leader training course candidates should have enough experience of paddling a variety of lines on grade 3 in comfort and control, and experience of paddling grade 4.

Once training has been completed candidates have up to three years to complete the assessment prerequisites and progress to assessment. If more time is required extension requests will be considered on a case by case basis.

Expand Assessment & Certification

Assessment are normally run over two days and take place on sections of white water, which must include suitable river journeys.

The rivers used must be advanced white water (rivers up to and including grade 4/5 with the overall standard of the run being grade 4) and include the following features:

  • Variety of different types of eddies
  • Surf waves and stoppers that include towbacks
  • Wave trains and diagonals
  • Technical paddling sections that require route choices to be made
  • Running slides, drops and waterfalls

Upon completion of the Assessment the course provider will submit successful participants for certification.
