Overview

The British Canoeing Star Awards acknowledge a paddler’s performance in achieving a specific set of skills at set levels. Our Star Awards can be assessed by qualified coaches who meet the provider requirements.

Below are details of how to become a provider. Qualifications stated are minimum requirements, higher qualifications are also accepted. If you are considering a provider role please familiarise yourself with the Star Award Guidance Notes, Course Syllabus and Tutor and Assessor Notes documents, for the relevant award.

Paddlesport Start is an encouragement award designed to provided a framework for a paddler’s first session.

The British Canoeing 1 Star Award is a sheltered water award which can be taken in any craft.

Our 2 Star Award is an improvement award which supports the development of fundamental paddlesport skills on sheltered water.

British Canoeing 3 Star Awards are discipline specific awards which recognise a paddler’s ability to operate competently in sheltered to moderate water environments.

Expand Leadership Awards

Overview

The British Canoeing Leadership Awards develop personal skills and leadership training in a sheltered, moderate or advanced water environment. The Guide endorsement is aimed at supporting and recognising the additional skills required when fulfilling a guiding role.

Paddlesport Leader Award

The Paddlesport Leader is aimed at paddlers taking on formal leadership responsibilities in benign, sheltered water environments and aims to support Leaders to run safe, quality, enjoyable trips based on their group’s needs and aspirations.

Moderate Water Leader Award

Leadership training offered by British Canoeing is embedded into the Moderate Water Leader Awards. As well as developing advanced personal skills, these discipline specific awards provide basic leadership training in the moderate water environment.

This training course is intended for all paddlers, coaches and volunteers irrespective of craft or discipline choice, and is available in either bank-based or boat-based option.

The White Water Safety and Rescue Training is designed for all paddlers operating in white water environment, either in a kayak or canoe.

Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning (CNTP)

This Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning course is designed for paddlers carrying out coastal journeys including islands up to 2 nautical miles offshore in areas of tidal movement up to up to 2 knots and winds of up to force 4.

Open Water Navigation and Tidal Planning (OWNTP)

Open Water Navigation and Tidal Planning training is designed for paddlers carrying out open water journeys including islands over 2 nautical miles offshore in areas of strong tidal movement of 3+ knots and/or including winds of up to force 5.
