Running a Course & Course Submission

British Canoeing Qualifications and Awards are delivered across the country by Course Providers. This section outlines the relevant information for Course Providers to run British Canoeing Qualifications and Awards and submit the course results after the course.

Course Authorisation

Providers must have British Canoeing or National Association membership and meet the Coach Update Scheme requirements to reflect current best practice in coaching paddlesport. Any moderation/minimum delivery requirements must also be followed.

British Canoeing Course Providers should log onto their Membership Portal to submit new course authorisations ahead of running any qualifications or award, except for the NEW Personal Performance Awards, the Guide Modules and the SUP Discipline Support Module. If Course Providers wish to have their courses advertised, they should submit a new course authorisation.

Submitting Course Results

After the course, candidate’s results must be submitted within seven days with the relevant fees. This can either be done by 

  1. Logging onto your Membership Portal, submitting your candidate results and paying online. Please see the ‘Digital Course Submissions’ tab for guidance videos and documents on how to submit course results.

The Membership Portal enables providers to automatically have their course authorised and advertised, submit the candidate results and pay online. 

The following documents and videos provide guidance on the course authorisation and course submission processes. This guidance is slightly different depending on whether your course needs authorisation ahead of the course or not.

Expand Course Staffing Ratios

Course Staffing Ratios

British Canoeing sets minimum and/or maximum candidate ratios for all formal training and assessment courses. In determining these ratios, the following factors have been considered.

Optimising the Learning Environment

A big enough group to allow paddlers to discuss their experiences and views and create opportunities for peer learning. A small enough group size to ensure the training or assessment can be tailored to the specific needs and interests of each paddler.

Safe Group Size

Maximum ratios also account for a group size in which the provider can manage the group safely when the activity, environment and craft.

Validity and Reliability

Where there is a minimum of two providers on a specific course this is in place to ensure the validity and reliability of the assessment process.
