Maintaining your Provider role

In order to remain a current Provider and ensure best practise, there are a number of requirements Providers should follow, depending on the role. Please see the following guidance to ensure you remain current as a Provider. 

All Providers must meet the Coach Update Scheme requirements to reflect current best practice in coaching paddlesport.

Remaining current as a Leadership Provider

Remaining current as a Paddlesport Leader Provider

A Paddlesport Leader Provider is expected to;

  • Remain active coaching
  • Remain up-to-date with current best practice in all aspects of the syllabus
  • Demonstrate personal paddling competence in the relevant disciplines and environments
  • Deliver a minimum of one Paddlesport Leader assessment course in each 3-year cycle

The National Assoications may also run compulsory or voluntary moderation or training to support providers, as they see fit.

Remaining current as a Moderate Water Leader Provider

A Moderate Water Leader Provider is expected to;

  • Remain active coaching in the relevant discipline/environment
  • Remain up-to-date with current best practice in all aspects of the relevant syllabus
  • Be able to demonstrate personal paddling competence in the relevant discipline/environment
  • Work a minimum of 1 training and 1 assessment course in each 3-year cycle (in the relevant discipline). Providers who do not meet the minimum requirements can put a case forward to keep their role if active (coaching and leading) in the specific environment, or active running relevant Moderate Water Leader Awards in other disciplines. These will be considered on a case by-case basis.

Remaining current as an Advanced Water Leader Provider

A Advanced Water Leader Provider is expected to;

  • Remain active coaching in the relevant discipline/environment
  • Remain up-to-date with current best practice in all aspects of the relevant Advanced Water Leader syllabus
  • Be able to demonstrate personal paddling competence in the relevant discipline/environment
  • Work a minimum of 1 training and 1 assessment course in each 3-year cycle (in the relevant discipline). Providers who do not meet the minimum requirements can put a case forward to keep their role if active (coaching and leading) in the specific environment, or active running relevant Advanced Water Leader Awards in other disciplines. These will be considered on a case by-case basis.

Remaining current as a Foundation Safety & Rescue Provider

FSRT Moderation events are aimed at existing FSRT Providers and serve as a standardisation exercise to ensure that providers are interpreting the syllabus the way it is intended and is an opportunity for people to share practice. Providers are required to attend FSRT Moderation every three years.

Providers who have been unable to attend a moderation event in the last three years will have their British Canoeing FSRT Provider role withdrawn, pending attendance at a re-orientation event.

Remaining current as a White Water Safety & Rescue Provider

Providers must meet the following requirements every three years:

  • Attend a one day update training event delivered by a National Association Provider Trainer.
  • WWSR Providers are required to deliver at least one course in each three year period.

Providers who have been unable to maintain their currency can assist as a suitably experienced assistant on a course to reinstate their Provider status, ensuring their name appears on the course schedule. Providers who fail to do either of the above within four years will be considered as lapsed and must re‐attend a two day re‐orientation course or other action plan as deemed necessary by your National Association.

Remaining current as an Advanced White Water Safety & Rescue Provider

Advanced White Water Safety & Rescue Providers are expected to:

  • Deliver a minimum of three courses in a three year period. (Delivery can be as Course Director, second staff or as an Observer).
  • Attend a one‐day training event delivered by an AWWSR Trainer every three years.

Providers whose currency has expired have two years to complete the above requirements, after this they will be considered lapsed. (Remaining current as an AWWSR provider also maintains the provider’s currency to deliver WWSR course
